Center hosts online book club for math teachers

In an ongoing effort to support math teachers at elementary schools in rural areas of North Idaho, the Regional Mathematics Center at the University of Idaho Coeur d’Alene will offer an online book club beginning Thursday, Jan. 19.

The purpose of the book club is to help teachers understand and apply the latest research in mathematics education, promoting the professional development of instructors who may not otherwise have access to such advanced resources. Web-based discussions of selected texts will be led by regional math specialist Abe Wallin and Julie Amador, assistant professor of mathematics education and director of the Idaho Regional Mathematics Center at UI Coeur d’Alene.

Wallin will travel to a different rural school for each meeting of the book club so participants can have a face-to-face interaction along with the web-based interaction.

“Here at the Regional Math Center, we’re tasked with supporting teachers in traditionally under-served rural areas,” Amador said. “Our online book club will provide rural teachers the opportunity to discuss the latest research in our field without the need to travel to Coeur d’Alene or Boise.”

The Idaho Regional Mathematics Center is actively recruiting participants in rural school districts from Bonners Ferry to Plummer.
