Jan. 12, 1967 — FAMILY LOSES ALL IN FIRE
Fire gutted the interior of a small dwelling in the 1500 block of Main street just before noon Monday.
Mrs. Frank (Mollie) Hayden and two children had all of their belongings damaged or charred beyond use. Mrs. Hayden was at work in Sandpoint Safeway Store at the time and the children, a boy 12 and a girl 16, were in school. Hayden works in Spokane.
Only a handful of volunteers responded to battle the smoky blaze. The house is beyond the city limits and out of the city fire department jurisdiction. The Haydens did not have a membership in the Northside Fire Assn.
Among the volunteers were Sheriff Robert Butigan and Chief of Police George Elliot and Officer Art Bourassa. While the city officers were there on their own, they were never-the-less there, coming during noon hour and helping the others trace down the last stubborn embers.
The area along Main street, west of the city limits is within the jurisdiction of the Northside Fire Assn. but that private organization recently drew the line against answering calls from members who were not paid up and those who were not members.

Keen was married Dec. 22 and lived on the corner of Superior and Florence. Neighbors say Keen and his wife left the night after the altercation and have not been back since.
