Jan. 17, 1967 – REMOVED FROM POST

Idaho Land Board dismissed Roger Guernsey Tuesday after the Idaho state forester accused Gov. Don Samuelson with playing politics with his office. In denying the Guernsey allegation, Samuelson said that “Guernsey’s dismissal would be of benefit to the state.” The governor added, “We need to coordinate our efforts” in management of Idaho’s natural resources.

The session which led to Guernsey’s firing was described as stormy. Guernsey asked Samuelson to state in writing the reasons why he should be discharged.

During the afternoon session when Guernsey’s future came to the vote, two Republicans, Gov. Samuelson and Secretary of State Edson Deal, and two Democrats, Superintendent Engelking and Auditor Joe Williams voted for removing him while Attorney General Allen Shepard passed.

Guernsey will be relieved of his post Feb. 1. In his final word to the land board, Guernsey expressed concern for the number of employees in his department, commenting that they didn’t know whether there would be 85 or 35 employed. In his statement after being fired, the forester noted he had spent 19 years in the post and had brought the size of the staff from 20 to 85.
