Lewiston sweeps Sandpoint

LEWISTON — Grace Kirscher had another big night, and Danika Tomazich had her best game of the season to lead Sandpoint, but at the end of the day 5A Lewiston was too much, as the Bengals ran past the Bulldogs 68-47 in nonleague girls basketball Monday at Lewiston High School.
Kirscher scored a game-high 22 points while grabbing seven rebounds and dishing out three assists, and the Bulldogs trailed by only five at half against a solid 5A team.
“We played really well that first half and part of the third quarter. We played the best we’ve played all year for two and half quarters,” said Bulldogs head coach Duane Ward. “Lewiston got really hot from the 3-point line and kind of wore us down.”
The Bengals (7-4) put up 39 points in the second half to put the game away.
Tomazich finished with 11 points and three steals, which bodes well for the Bulldogs (6-10), who have been looking for another scorer to step up. Ward felt she stepped up on both ends of the floor.
“She worked hard, penetrated and got fouled, made some free throws,” described Ward. “She picked off some passes and got some run outs. We need that kind of play from her.”
Trinity Golder added six points and three steals in defeat.
Sandpoint is at Lakeland on Friday in the first-ever Battle for the Paddle Spirit Games, which replace Moose Madness.

LEWISTON — When Bulldog head coach Kent Leiss saw the No. 5 Bengals (7-3) hold No. 4 Post Falls to just 39 points recently, he knew his team was going to be in for a tough game on Monday, a day off for students on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Patrick Rockwell scored a team high six points, but the Bulldogs (2-11) were simply out-manned, falling 58-24 in nonleague boys basketball Monday at Lewiston High School. T.J. Davis added five points, Robbie Johnson four and Bruin Jones, Alex Stockton and Ryan Roos three apiece in the loss, as points were tough to come by.
“They were so big, 6-9, 6-6, 6-6. I knew it was going to be tough, and we really struggled,” admitted Bulldogs head coach Kent Leiss. “We played hard, we were just over-matched. They’re big and athletic and play great defense.”
Sandpoint is at Lakeland on Friday in the Battle for the Paddle Spirit Game.
