Jan. 22, 1967 — WEIRD EXPERIENCE

A day long to be remembered by local men is Dec. 31. Les Brown, Don Diehl, Chris Hanson and John Congdon took the Northwest Jet out of Spokane for Minneapolis, enroute to Dallas where they were to watch the NFL game.

They were in Minneapolis in two hours and 20 minutes where they switched to Braniff airline for the rest of the trip. Shortly after takeoff the pilot announced a problem with the landing gear and advised passengers to not be disturbed by the noise. Because they couldn’t achieve full power, they returned to Minneapolis where they could see foam and fire trucks along the runway. The landing, however, was normal.

While remaining aboard for two and a half hours, a woman near Brown said her watch had stopped and they were doomed and she wanted off the plane. None was let off. Condensation appeared in the ceiling above Don Diehl from leaking jet kerosene.

Take off was no more successful and they returned again. The pilot had dumped excess fuel and the flight engineer was ripping up the carpet near Brown’s seat to help get the landing gear down. This time passengers were let off and after a wait of seven hours were given a smaller jet but the crew could not get it started. Instead of getting to Dallas at 9 a.m. it was near midnight but Brown said they were glad to get there at all.

Jan. 22, 1917 — PRIVATE GOAD HOME

Private Albert Goad of Company A is in the city on a brief furlough for a short visit before leaving to take passage for China to join the 15th infantry at Pekin. Goad reports all the boys in good health and spirits excepting Donald McInaney, Vic Reed and Roman Whalen, who will go to San Francisco for minor operations before being dismissed from the service. He says the regiment won’t be mustered out before Jan. 20, perhaps later.

FINEST ICE IN YEARS

The ice men are happy with the finest cut of ice of several years. John Selle has five teams filling his ice houses and will put up 1200 tons. The Pend d’Oreille creamery will put up about 500 tons. The ice is 14 inches thick, clear as a crystal, with no snow to scrape off before cutting.
