Having been involved with budgets for a number of organizations, for-profit and non-profit, I am very familiar the process and how decisions are made to fund an organization.

In reviewing the Lake Pend Oreille School Board approved supplemental levy budget (available on their website), I have a couple of questions:

1. $80,237 per year for “coaches’ supplies?” What the heck are they buying that they have to replace every year at that cost?

2. $130,000 per year for “contingency.” What kind of contingencies does this go toward, and, if the money is not spent, what happens to it?

As I have stated before, I am not anti-children, anti-teachers or anti-education. If I am forced to pay additional taxes for this school levy, I want to know what it’s for.

Once again, I urge all Bonner County citizens to step up and get involved. Contact your state senator and representative and encourage them to use this legislative session to increase state funding for school districts. Embarrassingly, Idaho ranks 49th out of 50 states in school funding.
