At this stage of life, it is sometimes sobering to recall the great “Jimmy Durante Show” in which, at the close of the show, he would dim the lights, put on his coat and hat and walk into the night and the retreating glow of street lights. In the distant light he stopped and bid a good night with a tip of his hat and a salute to “Mrs. Calabash, wherever you are.” This month, we have lost a wonderful man, Jim Klein, whom many of us have known as an outstanding educator, athlete, scientist, skier, swimmer, bicyclist, parent, neighbor, and, erstwhile speaker of Spanish.

An educator often goes unrecognized until one looks back at the many circles of light that a teacher kindles for his students. Imbued with many gracious qualities, Jim will most be remembered as an inspiring mentor. When one looks at the underlying rationale of life we see Jim’s to have been a shining example of service. His pursuit of knowledge led him and his students into a realm of exploration and a thirst for greater understanding. Exploration leads to adventure and an passion for living that a great educator must hope is the final result of a teacher’s mission. As you step into the retreating glow of the cosmos’ lights, a “tip of the hat” to you, Jim Klein, for all that you have given to us.
