There were some concerns about the proposed dog park and its location. Hopefully I can add to the discussions.
Let’s go directly to the “pet waste” issue, in and around the water. Most dog owners are responsible for their pet’s waste and dog owners who use dog parks are generally concerned pet owners. I am not going to say that 100 percent of dog waste will be picked up, but, as a responsible pet owner I always pick up after my dog and if I see extra waste laying around, it gets picked up.
If I use the logic about waste, let’s look at human pollution. There is an area that has become a popular party spot behind Lakeview Park. I come in the morning and find smashed liquor bottles, used condoms and assorted beer cans — which I pick up. So, we should ban people from the park because of pollution.
Have you seen the lake after a very busy day at the boat ramp? The amount of oil sitting on top of the water? Using the same logic — we need to ban all power boats because of pollution.
The water is used by an assorted array of wildlife. The amount of “waste” from these sources is already in the water. If waste is a concern, we need to ban all wildlife from using the lake.
The other concern was the location. People drive to Memorial Field for games and The Festival. Maybe we should relocate Memorial Field? So all those people wouldn’t have to drive so far.
Dog waste, pollution and location, in my mind, is just a way of saying “I don’t want a dog park in my neighborhood.”
