Pend Oreille Surgery Center hosts technique lab
A recent technique lab at Pend Oreille Surgery Center gave local medical crews hands-on practice with a new minimally invasive procedure that targets debilitating arthritis of the knee and shoulder.
Pend Oreille Surgery Center hosted a technique lab on Feb. 22. Present were surgeons Mike DiBenedetto and Mike Schicker as well as advanced practice registered nurse Travis Taylor. The technique lab was sponsored by Arthrex, Inc., with representatives Jeremy Whitney, David Cook, Devon Marcus and Jeff Pilkington on hand for the event.
The lab provided hands-on practice in techniques utilizing the Arthrex iBalance Unicondylar Knee and the Univers Revers Shoulder. Both are surgical procedures aimed at correction of debilitating arthritis of the knee and shoulder with the goal of returning patients to their maximum activity level, Pend Oreille Surgery Center staff said in a press release.
The iBalance Unicompartmental knee, or partial knee replacement, is considered a minimally invasive treatment for localized cartilage degeneration of either the medial (inside) or lateral (outside) bones of the knee joint. Both Drs. DiBenedetto and Schicker are performing this procedure, which is approved by Medicare to be performed at inpatient as well as outpatient facilities.
Arthrex Univers Revers shoulder arthroplasty, or shoulder replacement, is done to alleviate shoulder pain and improve range of motion in patients who have progressively worsening shoulder pain and limitations in activity. Dr. Schicker is most impressed with this technology and will be scheduling patients for this procedure in the very near future. At this time, Medicare has not approved the shoulder replacement for outpatient centers.
Michael DiBenedetto, M.D., performs procedures at Pend Oreille Surgery Center, llc and Boundary Community Hospital. Michael Schicker, D.O. has privileges at Pend Oreille Surgery Center, llc, Bonner General Health and Boundary Community Hospital. Travis Taylor, NP provides surgical first assistance and sees patients in the clinic setting.
