President Donald Trump recently acknowledged that the national health care program is “more complicated” than it might seem. The same can be said for providing a school district to educate our children and youth. And because it is complicated in both positive and negative ways, it’s important we find healthy ways to critique the upcoming maintenance levy.

We are very supportive of our schools and the March 14 levy. It is vital for continuing to give our students the best possible learning environment. But we want to encourage many of you who are negative about the levy to practice an alternative way .

“The best criticism of the bad is to practice the better.” This bit of wisdom might apply to the school levy in more than a few ways. How many of the flurry of financial statistics and out-of-context anecdotes have you thoroughly checked out?

We have easily contacted district officials who helpfully answered our questions. They are glad to do the same for you if you only call or write.

When was the last time you were actually inside one of our schools? They are always looking for volunteers. Discover for yourselves what actually happens in the classrooms, the lunchrooms, the gym, the playgrounds.

Paul has contacted LPOSD officials about being guests at a Geezer Forum next fall, so we can have a healthy learning-listening conversation about our schools and our children. Hopefully that is “practicing the better.”
