Every two years Chicken Little appears to cry “the sky is falling” if a supplemental levy isn’t passed. After observing this situation I can’t figure out what all the fuss is about. Reality says no supplemental levy will ever fail in this district. Here’s why:

1. Voter apathy. The history of voter turnout for LPOSD levy elections is quite frankly pathetic. The 2013 turnout was just 28 percent and the 2015 turnout was 32 percent of registered voters. This meant the yes votes totaled 16 percent of the registered voters in 2013 and 22 percent in 2015 which decided the school taxes you paid.

2. School district employee vote. The district employs about 500-plus people. If only 350 of these employees vote yes that amounts to 7 percent of the 2015 levy vote total and is a high enough percentage to guarantee passage.

3. Exclusion of non-resident property owners from voting.

4. Allowing non-property owners to vote.

5. Community scorn if you voice opposition to the levy. Your anti-children.

6. Money. Who organizes the yes levy movement and where does their money come from?

7. The Daily Bee support. The Daily Bee has never failed to urge a yes vote on an LPOSD levy and has given extensive coverage to pro-levy supporters.

By the way individuals who opt for private schooling or home schooling still have to pay the school tax.

Rest assured the levy will pass, the district employees will get their wages increased, extracurricular activities will continue and, as usual, Chicken Little will be back in two years.
