I grew up in a family of educators. My mother was an elementary school teacher for nearly 40 years. My father was a school administrator who is now consulting for several school districts in North Idaho. If I were to identify their top priority (other than family) it would be education.
Growing up around the dinner table, our conversations would often focus on school. “How was your day at school? What did you learn about? What subjects are you finding interesting?” Additionally, my parents would reflect on how they were doing professionally. What they were succeeding at. What they were struggling with. They were always looking to improve the educational environment. It drove me nuts back then because after a full day of school, I didn’t want to hear more about it. But I did. Constantly. Over and over and over again.
Looking back now, I’ve come to understand and appreciate why my parents were so focused and committed to discussing education. I’ve realized that for them, education wasn’t just a profession; it was devotion. It was something ingrained in them. It was something that they dedicated their lives to because they believed in the lives that education has an impact on.
We need to be supporting our schools the same way they have been supporting our families. Please vote yes on the upcoming school levy so that educators are able to continue their commitment to providing our community with the education it deserves.
