SANDPOINT — A host of local gymnasts represented Sandpoint with both class and skill, as the S.T.E.P. gymnastics team competed recently at a pair of meets in Idaho.

The S.T.E.P. team, an acronym for Seeking To Encourage People, held their own at the Palouse Invitational at the University of Idaho in early February. The Bronze team took home first place, the Silver team finished second and the Gold team fourth.

The next meet took them to the Great West Gym Fest at the Coeur d’Alene Resort in late February, a very large and competitive meet bringing more than 1,500 gymnasts from around the region to compete at the resort. Previous Olympians were there to hand out awards to all of the up and coming gymnastics stars.

Avery Edmundson and Emily Price-Williams each scored in the top 20 out of 1,500 gymnasts for their all-around scores. Edmundson was 9th with a score of 37.75, followed by Price-Williams in 12th with a 37.625.

The Bronze level team started off the day of competition. In the Junior A division, S.T.E.P. gymnasts dominated the podium with Rhaelyn Schedlbauer in 1st, Kinsley Vasquez in 2nd and Khloe Brady 3rd. The Bronze team took home a 3rd place team trophy.

The Silver Team competed next. Price-Williams took home 1st in the Jr. A division, Audrey Sheffler 1st in the Jr. B and Edmundson 1st in Senior B. The entire Silver team had an extraordinary day scoring two points(a big number in gymnastics) higher than all of the other teams, leading to a first place trophy.

The Gold team finished out the day of competition. Kelly Moellmer finished 1st on both Bars and Beam in the Jr. B division, and Kelsey Thomas placed 1st on beam in the Jr. C division. Lydia Nielsen (Sr. A) scored the highest floor score 9.475 out of all of the gymnasts in the Gold level, while her teammate Marianne Pinkerton followed close behind with a score of 9.425 earning her a 1st place floor finish in the Sr. C division. Megan Price-Williams also a Sr. C competitor took home 1st on bars.

The Gold team finished 1st on Floor, 1st on Beam, 2nd on bars and 4th all-around as a team.

The S.T.E.P. gymnasts are in Boise this weekend competing at the state championships.
