March 12, 1967 — SCARED TOT FOUND

Children playing with matches got a scare but escaped without harm last week when firemen were called to extinguish a fire in an unused shed near 516 Sixth Ave.

Mrs. Nina Hull, while hanging out clothes at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Jack Coleman noticed smoke coming from the building owned by Lyle Bergstrom. Several youngsters ran out of the shed and Mrs. Coleman, not seeing her son, entered the building and found him frightened and coughing but otherwise unharmed.

Firemen quickly extinguished the blaze. They reported that the children had apparently built a small campfire inside the shed, and the fire spread to chips on the floor.

CONVENTION CENTER EXPLORED

The idea of a Sandpoint area convention center was discussed last week by the Chamber board of directors. The suggestion is that the people who come here winter and summer need further activities to round out their days. Such a center could have an indoor swimming pool for year around use and an ice skating rink for filling out the winter sport superiority of North Idaho.

A community center would also have facilities for large meetings, a floor for large dances, etc.

The Eagles will give their annual St. Patrick’s Day ball at the Rink Wednesday evening. Aside from the time and place, the fact that the Eagles are to be hosts guarantees a good time.

Miss Laura Elsasser entertained a number of friends at her parents’ home on Boyer Saturday. The young people danced until late, when lunch was served, after which a taffy pull completed in a highly satisfactory manner a very happy evening.

DANCE AS LATE AS YOU WANT TO

A bill before the legislature which would have put a midnight ban on dance halls was defeated after acrimonious debate. Some felt it necessary for the good morals of the state’s young people, but Sen. Jackson said it would work against community halls in Bonner county where the rural residents gather of a Saturday night and he could not remove this innocent pleasure from them.

A.C. WHITE LOSES HIS HAT

Laclede lumberman A.C. White fell into icy river waters last week from the ferry while crossing the river to make the S.I. train to Sandpoint. Using a plank to break ice in front of the ferry, he had a miscue, the ice went out from under and he went in all over. He had the wisdom to grab the cable and was fished out, but lost his hat and the train.
