Dewey, Flint lead Bulldogs to win in opener

SPOKANE — A sharp opening outing by Talon Dewey, coupled with the hot bat of Trey Flint, led the Bulldogs to a 9-3 win over West Valley in the opener of a nonleague doubleheader on Saturday at West Valley High School.
Dewey was sharp for the Bulldogs, who took an actual baseball field for the first time this season, striking out eight while allowing just three hits and one earned run in five crisp innings.
Flint provided much of the run support, ripping a home run and triple among his team-high four hits, driving in three runs as the Bulldogs (1-1) broke the game open by scoring eight runs in the final four frames to back Dewey.
Jacob Cometto and Thomas Riley each had two hits and scored twice, part of a 13-hit effort to start the season off on a positive note. Preston Pettit closed the game out with two innings of work.
The Bulldogs appeared to be headed for the sweep, but couldn’t hold a lead in the second game, allowing three runs in the sixth in a 6-5 loss.
Cometto hit a triple and Alex Stockton a double in the loss, as the Bulldogs strung together seven hits. Garrett Connolly was a bright spot in defeat, tossing four-plus innings of solid long relief, allowing three hits while striking out three to keep the game close.
Considering it was the first time they’ve taken the field all season, the Bulldogs’ defense was sharp, committing just two errors in two games, which is a great sign moving forward.
Sandpoint travels south to face Lewiston in a doubleheader on Saturday, after Tuesday’s scheduled game at Timberlake was postponed due to poor field conditions.
