School showcases service learning

This spring, students at Forrest Bird Charter High School will be studying their core classes through an unusual approach: giving to others.

Service learning is a seven-week project that creates change and promotes positive interactions. Students entering the community to help others enables them to apply their knowledge and areas of expertise to real-life situations, and in return, enriches their perspectives of community issues and promotes interaction between teens and local organizations.

Integrated learning is unique for each project member: students will apply content-area learning into the specific service they perform. Project ideas reach as far as the students’ imaginations and access to service learning sites. Teaching computer skills to patrons at assisted living homes, stocking items at the Bonner Community Food Bank, caretaking public garden beds, and painting with the disabled are among ideas for 100 student service learners.

Students will be serving throughout the month of May and are in need of community projects. If you have community service ideas and connections, please contact Forrest Bird Charter School and let us know your ideas. Please call 265-9737 and leave a message for Holly or email hollywalker@forrestbirdcharterschool.org with input and insights. We appreciate your help in helping our community.
