March 26, 1967 – MINIMUM AGE MOVED UP
It is going to be tougher for young couples to tie the marriage knot in Idaho under a new bill introduced by Rep. Gladys Swank, D-Lewiston.
The measure revises upwards the minimum ages for marriages and provides a three-day waiting period. The law also requires a medical examination.
Minimum age for females in the bill is 18 and 21 for males without parental consent. With parental consent, girls may marry at 16 and boys at 18. Below these ages, a court order is required.
Under the present law, boys may marry at 18 and girls at 17 with parental consent.
The bill went through four rounds of amendments and has now been passed by the Legislature and sent to Gov. Don Samuelson.

TAX COMMISSION RULES
The Idaho Tax Commission in a ruling handed down Wednesday turned down the appeal of the Bonner County Shoreline Property Owners in their appeal from “discriminatory” assessment of shoreline property determined by former Assessor Forrest Wetterow.
The tax commission hearing was held here last Nov 15. It has taken four months for the commission to reach a decision.
Directors of the shoreline group will meet soon to consider the next step.

Ten years ago, in 1907, Bonner county came into existence; offices were located at Weil’s office temporarily. A.J. Clark was elected chairman of the county board.

GERMANY SINKS 3 AMERICAN SHIPS
The sinking of the American steamships City of Memphis, Illinois and Vigilancia was announced Monday morning. Fourteen men from the Vigilancia are missing, as are some from the City of Memphis. The Illinois’ crew landed safely.

STATE OF WAR EXISTS NOW
With the announcement of the ruthless destruction of three unarmed American merchant ships by submarines it was unofficially admitted here Sunday that virtually a state of war exists between the U.S. and Germany. Technically the U.S. remains in a position of armed neutrality.

OUR WEATHER NOT SO WORST
Sandpoint and the Idaho panhandle may have had pretty rough usage from the weather man in March, but other places fared worse. Letters from Wisconsin tell of zero weather, heavy snowfalls and a coal famine. In some Wisconsin towns the families have had to take refuge in public buildings to keep warm and many families are “doubling up” to beat the high cost of fuel.
