UI announces high school art contest winners

MOSCOW — The University of Idaho has announced the winners of the 26th annual statewide high school art competition, “Visualizing Science,” sponsored by the College of Art and Architecture’s Art and Design program. Among the winners is Alana Seifert of Sandpoint High School, who received second-place honors.
High school art classes throughout the state participated in the competition.
“An artistic interpretation of science opens the door for a greater understanding of important — and often complicated — issues that impact our world,” said Sally Machlis, head of the Art and Design program. “Engaging students in STEM disciplines through the arts opens up the possibility of an education to a wide range of students who might not otherwise be interested.”
Artwork were exhibited in Ridenbaugh Hall on UI’s Moscow campus. A list of honorable mentions and participating high schools is available at uidaho.edu/caa/news/annual-events/high-school-art-exhibit.
The competition was judged by Ali Carr-Chellman, dean of the College of Education; Nishhiki Sugawara Beda, assistant professor of painting; art education students Sabrina Sirani, Skyla Glindeman, and Jacob Oths; and art and design graduate students David Jaansen and David Roon.
The theme of this year’s exhibition “Visualizing Science” corresponds with an interdisciplinary grant project of the same name, where University of Idaho scientists and artists and designers worked together to visually interpret scientific research.
This work is being exhibited at the Prichard Art Gallery until April 15.
“The energy that takes place when these two disciplines work together is exciting and palpable,” Machlis said.
Awards were presented to students at a reception on Friday, Feb. 24.
Art contest winners:
- Best of Show ($1,000 scholarship to UI CAA, and a $150 gift certificate) — Allysen Hei, Kellogg High School.
- First place ($100 gift certificate) — Ashley Martin, Eagle High School; and Savannah Thoeny, Post Falls High School.
- Second place ($75 gift certificate) — Alana Seifert, Sandpoint High School; Kimber Young, Middleton High School; and Kenna Torbeck, Coeur d’Alene High School.
• Third place ($50 gift certificate) — Rachel Lui, Eagle High School; Riley Morgan, Parma High School; Faith Uhlenkott, Prairie High School; Zoey Wonenberg, Buhl High School; Ivan Ruiz, Skyline High School; Erin Quigley, St. Maries High School; Jenna Bauer, St. Maries High School; and Connor McMurray, Coeur d’Alene High School.
