Bulldogs bounce 5A Bengals for first time

| May 9, 2017 1:00 AM

SANDPOINT — After tying the Bengals in the previous two meetings, the Bulldog tennis team notched a big 8-4 win over the Bengals in a tennis match Monday afternoon at Travers Park and Pine St. Field.

Led by a sweep of both boys and girls doubles, Bulldog head coach Kent Anderson said it was the first time he’s ever heard of the Sandpoint tennis team beating 5A Lewiston head to head.

Jacob Jackson and Patrick Rockwell notched a strong 8-2 pro set win at No. 1 boys doubles, flashing some of the power and ability to end points abruptly, and will be a force at the upcoming district tournament this weekend in Moscow.

“Patrick and Jacob played one of their best matches together of the season,” said Anderson. “Their contrasting styles create huge problems for opponents.”

Alana Seifert won 8-2 in a sharp match at No. 2 girls singles, earning the respect of her coach.

“Her consistency is amazing but she’s not a counter-puncher,” he described. “She moves the ball around the court and always has a plan on every point.”

Sandpoint is now 10-1-1 in head-to-head matches on the season. They’ll face 4A IEL rival Moscow on Wednesday in a big showdown at 2 p.m. at Travers Park.
