May 14, 1967 — ATHLETES HONORED

All SHS athletic teams except football (honored last fall) were recognized at the first spring sports banquet in the senior high gym Monday, attended by over 200 people. The coaching staff and Principal Richard Sodorff paid respect to the basketball, wrestling, track and golf teams as well as student managers and cheerleaders. In other years only basketball players were honored.

The most valuable player trophy, awarded to the basketball player chosen as most outstanding by his teammates, was given by Russ Sayers, originator of the award, to senior guard Herb Burnett, also the SHS student body president.

In a surprise presentation, the SHS lettermen’s organization, the S club, awarded an honorary membership in the club to Police Chief George Elliot in recognition of his many efforts on behalf of Sandpoint athletics over the years.

CITY TO CALL BIDS FOR LIBRARY WORK

The city council announced at Monday’s regular monthly meeting that bids for alterations on the new library building (2nd and Alder) will be called for June 6 at city hall. Chairman of the city library committee, Francis McDonnell, said the board is concerned as costs will rise when the library moves to the new building and funds will not be available under the present setup. County help is needed but until a county library district is formed, the county cannot levy for funds for the purpose.

May 14, 1917 — JOY RIDERS WRECK

A party of five, speeding across the long bridge at 40 to 50 miles an hour, overturned in a Ford car and hurled with terrific force against a pile of wood Tuesday. They miraculously escaped with only one badly strained shoulder. Out joy riding at 4 a.m., they covered the two mile bridge at record speed, then spilled as they dashed off the south end approach, the car turning a complete somersault, some say a double somersault. At all events they were thoroughly spilled.

MORE HOME GARDENING ENLISTMENTS

Spring gardening has begun and vacant lots in Sandpoint are being cultivated by men, women, boys and girls. Potatoes will be the leading crop but there are easier things to raise than potatoes that should not be planted till apple blossom time.

Beans have been grown and ripened here for years and pay better than potatoes and can be grown on soil that has never been fertilized.

English peas thrive in all conditions and if not used as a green vegetable can be harvested dry. They are very nutritious and keep indefinitely.

Sandpoint’s group of young ladies and girls is going to can and preserve all surplus vegetables and save thousands of dollars this summer.

Government bulletins with instructions for growing and canning for home and market can be had by calling the Humbird Lumber co. office.
