MIDDLETON — Clark Fork freshman Sara Hathaway rose to the occasion at the 1A state track and field championships on Friday at Middleton High School.

Hathaway cleared 5-0 to finish fourth in the high jump, equaling the winning height. The top four girls all cleared 5-0, but tie-breaker criteria and number of misses pushed her down to fourth. Nonetheless, it was a strong state debut for Hathaway, who broke her own school record by two-inches.

She also finished fourth in the prelims of the 100 hurdles, just ahead of senior teammate Emily Garman, who finished seventh. Both advanced to today’s final, where they hope to challenge for spots on the podium.

Senior Nona Young finished 16th in the shot put with a toss of 28-7, but got to end her high school career with a trip to state.

Hunter Boudousquie fouled and failed to register a mark in the long jump.

Boudousquie, Hathaway and Garman will all be in action today in the finals.

n Shelton, Heisel out at state tennis

BOISE — Sophomore Grace Shelton and senior Jensen Heisel lost their first match in straight sets to a very good Fruitland team that is now in the finals of the 3A state tennis tournament in Boise, then lost 6-1, 6-0 to Homedale in the consolation round.

“Both Grace and Jensen have been playing for only two years while maintaining excellent grades and playing two other sports this year,” said Cats head coach Jeff Emmer. “I’m really proud of them. Grace is only a sophomore and gained valuable state experience.”
