His family moved to Sandpoint in 1960, opening the Pend Oreille Cheese Company. Richard was 15 and worked for the family business.
In high school he met his “wweetheart,” Ruth Walker. They were married Feb. 21, 1964. They moved around the Northwest in their early years while he worked for the BN Railroad as a signal inspector. They moved back to Sand-point in 1973 where they raised their children Jeff and Sally. He retired from the railroad in 2006.
Dick graduated from Sandpoint High School in 1964. He loved his Sandpoint Bulldogs. He was awarded the Jerry Kramer Award for Outstanding Lineman his senior year. Dick’s longtime friend Jim Bloxom visited Dick recently told his kids “At 150 pounds, Dick took on a 260-pound nose guard from University High School and whipped him. We won 6-0. There was nobody tougher!”
He loved and supported all youth sports. He was president of the Sandpoint Youth Athletic Association and coached Junior Tackle football. He also enjoyed fishing, camping, golf, gardening and travel.
Recently he was able to travel back to Michigan with his sister Deanna. It was a memorable adventure for both of them. A trip with Jeff and Sally to a Seahawks game was one they will always cherish.
His last “road trip” was this spring when he and his dog Bucky went to Arizona in the RV. They visited old friends, family and even took in a Zags game at the WCC tournament with his kids and grandkids,
