A highlight of Selkirk Fire, Rescue and EMS open house on Oct. 21 was when former-long time Sandpoint fire volunteer from 1963-1986, Bob Sawhill, visited with current crews along with his wife, Althea. About 200 people attended the event and firefighters handed out 60 smoke detectors . Daylight Saving Time is always the time to change smoke alarm batteries. The day saw many happy families, kids, and older residents enjoying the event and learning valuable safety tips as well.

During the month of October, National Fire Prevention Month, Selkirk Fire, Rescue and EMS crews spent time in the local schools educating kids on fire prevention and safety. Firefighters reached a total of 1,000 residents throughout the month, highlighting planning ahead, working smoke alarms in the home/business and having a meeting place outside in case of a fire that everyone clearly knows ahead of time.
