Looking to the future

SANDPOINT — Senior year can be a stressful time for high school students. While some have their future plans set, many are still exploring their options.
All Things Senior is an event for all seniors in the area to explore those options in one central location. High school seniors who are home-schooled or from other high schools in the area are invited to the event, and parents are encouraged to attend as well.
"It is a great event," said Kendall Stratton, SHS college and career mentor. "It's a lot of information and a lot of exposure to different schools and other options."
And there will be cookies, Stratton said.
All Things Senior is an event organized by North Idaho Higher Education and hosted by Sandpoint High School. The event is not just for students who plan to attend college, Stratton said. There will be plenty of job opportunity information available as well.
"It's really important because I don't think a lot of students know what is all out there, and what options and avenues they are able to take," Stratton said. "... Having all of those different schools and resources, I think it will just be really eye opening and good to have students see all of those things."
The main event will be held in the SHS commons from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 4, where 25 colleges from across Idaho, Washington, Montana, Oregon and one from Arizona will be represented. The United States Army, Air Force, Navy and the University of Idaho's Army ROTC program will be in attendance, as well as representatives from the Idaho Department of Labor, the East Bonner County Library District and Jostens. Information on graduation night and scholarship opportunities will be available as well.
Workshops will be held throughout the evening as well. The first workshop session, from 6-6:25 p.m., includes "College admission — things to know," which will be held in the library; financial aid in the auditorium, and scholarships/Career Information System in room S4. The same schedule of workshops is included in the second session from 6:30-6:55 p.m. The third and final session begins at 7 p.m. with "The common application and what colleges look for," which will be in the library. Question and answer sessions will also be held at 7 p.m. in both the auditorium and room S4.
