Red hot entertainment offsets chilly fall Nights

SANDPOINT – There’s a chill in the air, but the entertainment is red hot this month! Starting tonight, get your Cajun on, as BeauSoleil owns the stage at The Fox. As the weekend rolls around, local venues are packed with music from some of our favorite bands.

On Saturday, the fabulous Harvest Fest fun gets going out at Hickey Farms and the Bonner County History Museum hosts its monthly First Free Saturday.

Also of note – looking into next week – the Panida shows two free documentaries: ‘Screenagers’ on Tuesday and ‘Outdoor Idaho; Almost Canada’ on Wednesday.

Thursday, Oct. 5

‘BeauSoleil’

Venue: Martin Woldson Theater at the Fox, 1001 W. Sprague Ave., in Spokane.

Time: 7:30 p.m.

For 40 years, master fiddler Michael Doucet and his rich Cajun band have captivated listeners around the world. BeauSoleil’s many accolades include 12 Grammy nominations. Garrison Keillor featured the band regularly on a Prairie Home Companion, and when Bob Dylan heard them in New Orleans he said, ‘That’s my kind of music!’ Proceeds benefit Spokane Public Radio.

Friday, Oct. 6

Bright Moments Jazz

Venue: Eichardt’s Pub, 212 Cedar St., in Sandpoint.

Time: 7-10 p.m.

There’s music – and there’s the kind of transcendent music played by this top-drawer, local jazz band. You won’t want to miss this one!

Admission: Free and open to the public.

Devon Wade

Venue: MickDuff’s Beer Hall, 220 Cedar St., in Sandpoint.

Time: 6:30 p.m.

Devon is an independent country music artist out of Sandpoint Idaho with a strong love for what country music has always been, songs about real life.

Admission: Free for those 21 and over.

Britchy

Venue: Pend d’Oreille Winery, 301 Cedar St., in Sandpoint.

Time: 5-8 p.m.

Great duo out of Missoula who will make your feet tap

Admission: Free and open to the public.

The Somethings

Venue: 219 Lounge, 219 First Ave., in Sandpoint.

Time: 9 p.m.

Come out and welcome Sandpoint’s newest duo (Megan Turner and Chris Lynch) to the ‘Niner as they work their melodic magic with a wide variety of popular songs and music featuring swing, jazz and rockabilly.

Saturday, Oct. 7

Harvest Festival

Venue: Hickey Farms, 674 Hickey Road, just east of Kootenai.

Time: 10:30 a.m.-dusk, Saturdays through Oct. 22

U-Pick pumpkins, face painting, crafts and loads of kids activities, food vendors and live music by Devon Wade, plus classes by the Pottery Bug from 1-3 p.m. This is an amazing family event, not to be missed!

Admission: Free and open to the public (pumpkins available for purchase after you pick ‘em!)

First Free Saturday

Venue: Bonner County History Museum, 611 S. Ella Ave., in

Sandpoint.

Time: 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

Join your friends at the museum for a day of soaking up our rich local and regional history. Come check out the new exhibits and re-discover just how cool our local museum is.

Incredible Flying Dookie Brothers

Venue: 219 Lounge, 219 First Ave., in Sandpoint.

Time: 9 p.m.

It’s time to dance to this local rock group, which will be playing a range of classic rock songs.

Live Music

Venue: Sandpoint Farmers Market, Farmin Park, Third Ave. & Oak St., downtown Sandpoint.

Time: Market starts at 9 a.m., music from 10 a.m.-1 p.m.

David Lane Walsh

Venue: Pend d’Oreille Winery, 301 Cedar St., in Sandpoint.

Join this guitar virtuoso for an evening of stellar music.

Browne Salmon Truck

Venue: MickDuff’s Beer Hall, 220 Cedar St., in Sandpoint.

Time: 6:30 p.m.

Comprised of Sandpoint locals Drew Browne on bass, Samantha Carston vocals, and Truck Mills guitar this trio plays vintage and contemporary blues, jazz, Latin and more. They don’t play often so don’t miss a chance to hear their awesome sound.

Spokane Symphony Classics: Beethoven & Dvorák

Venue: Martin Woldson Theater at the Fox, 1001 W. Sprague Ave., in Spokane.

Time: 8 p.m.

Beethoven’s revolutionary Piano Concerto No. 4 is a perfect match for up-and-coming pianist Ran Dank’s dazzling technique. Then experience Dvorák’s Symphony No. 6, the work that launched his international career, and a perennial favorite of concertgoers. Joyful and pastoral, it pays homage to Brahms while painting an idealized portrait of Czech country life. The program begins with Fujikura’s wonderful orchestral work ‘Banitza Groove!’ There is a pre-concert talk one hour before each performance.

‘Screenagers’

Venue: Panida Theater, 300 N. First Ave., in Sandpoint.

Sponsored by the Sandpoint Waldorf School, Screenagers explores teenagers and parents as they struggle over social media, video games, academics and internet addiction and offers solutions to help kids find balance. A documentary for teenagers and their parents with a discussion afterwards.

Sest African Traditions Drum Class

This group explores the rich tradition of West African drumming styles under the expert leadership of Ali Thomas.

‘Fall Chorale Review’

Venue: Coeur d’Alene First Presbyterian Church, 521 E. Lakeside Ave., in Coeur d’Alene.

The North Idaho College Cardinal Chorale and Chamber Singers present the Fall Choral Preview, opening with the Cardinal Chorale performing Joseph Hayden’s ‘Missa Brevis Sancti Joannis de Deo’ – also known as the ‘Little Organ Mass.’ Featured on this work will be NIC Instructor Marietta Hardy, organ, and NIC student Katie Klock, soprano. Also presented on this program will be music from Mongolia, Romania, Japan, and Brazil.

‘Outdoor Idaho; Almost Canada’

Venue: Panida Theater, 300 N. First Ave., in Sandpoint.

Time: 7 p.m.

Highlights the terrain and activities in the northern section of the Idaho panhandle that borders Canada. Features the Boundary-Smith Creek Wildlife Management Area, rafting the Moyie River, the Kootenai Tribe’s work with sturgeon, the Upper Priest Lake Scenic Area, American Falls at the end of the Centennial Trail, fishing on the Kootenai River, and horse packing to the Shorty Peak Lookout.

‘The Conversation – Art, Advocacy & City Planning’

Venue: Ivano’s Ristorante, 102 First Ave., in Sandpoint.

Time: 6-8 p.m.

Andy Meyer, visual artist and recent Ohio State University graduate in Arts Management, will speak on ‘The Six Culturally Driven Strategies to Stimulate Economic Growth.’

‘Dustbowl Revival’

Venue: Panida Theater, 300 N. First Ave., in Sandpoint.

Time: 7 p.m.

POAC partners with Mattox Farm Productions to present The Dustbowl Revival, whose joyous Americana soul vibes won them ‘the best live band in LA’ recognition by LA Weekly. One night only with Missoula’s Shakewell as the opening act, thumping out funk and soul to get the party started.

Sandpoint Contra Dance

Venue: Sandpoint Community Hall, 204 S. First Ave., in Sandpoint.

Time: 7-10 p.m.

Celebrate the joys of community by dancing with friends – those you already know and the new ones you’re about to meet! Live music will be provided by ‘Out of the Wood’ and all dances are called by Emily Faulkner. Previous dancing experience is not necessary. First-time dancers are encouraged to arrive on time for an introductory dance at 7 pm. Bring clean, comfortable, non-marking shoes to dance in.
