Wampus Cats end season with 76-42 shootout win

MULLAN — Wade Stevens ended a stellar four-year run as the starting quarterback at Clark Fork on a high note, running for three touchdowns and throwing for two more to lead the Wampus Cats to a wild 76-42 win over the Tigers on Friday afternoon in Mullan.

Stevens finished with 120 yards passing and 94 yards rushing, and as always, made a bunch of tackles from his safety position. Cats head coach Brian Arthun knows what Stevens brings to the table, and knows he’ll be difficult to replace.

“He’ll be sorely missed,” said Arthun. “He’s one of those special players that only comes around once in a while.”

Sophomore Josh Constantin had another nice game on the ground with 136 yards rushing and three touchdowns, with junior Theo Icardo adding 95 yards rushing with three touchdowns and four two-point conversions for the Wampus Cats (4-5, 4-4 WSL).

Eight man football has been described as a track meet in cleats, and with 118 points put up, Friday’s affair did not disappoint. Bryant Moore, Stevens’ favorite target for the past four years, caught a 39 yard touchdown, and freshman Cameron Garcia hauled in an 81 yard pass for a score. Garcia could end up replacing Stevens at quarterback next season, and was part of a strong showing by the team’s underclassmen.

“We talked about sending kids out with a win, and the underclassmen stepped up their game played extra hard,” said Arthun, lauding the work of the offensive line. “Ty Ballard, Joel, Jacob and Charlie opened up holes and controlled the line of scrimmage.”
