Sept. 3, 1967 – GOVERNOR DENIED
Gov. Don Samuelson’s request that Idaho be declared a disaster area because of the fire situation was turned down by the National Office of Emergency Planning and the governor sent a second message Tuesday asking the office to reconsider. The governor’s telegram said he “believes misunderstandings exist concerning the seriousness of Idaho’s emergency and financing of efforts to combat theses fires. Losses are still mounting; eight state fire fighting funds and resources are exhausted.”

NORTHSIDE PLANS NEW FIRE STATION
Northside Fire Assn. will have a new home this winter. The new fire house is to be adjacent to the present fire house and city hall in Ponderay. The structure will be a cement and pumice block building capable of storing both fire engines. Officials said having the fire station at Ponderay will give that community better protection, and is a central location for the two fire trucks in the area under the fire association’s protection.

GUNBY RECEIVES AIR MEDAL
Capt. James, F. Gunby, son of Mrs. Hortense Gunby, 620 Forest, Sandpoint, has received an air medal at Korat Royal Thai AFB, Thailand, from Lt. Gen. James W. Wilson, Commander of the 13th Air Force. Gunby was cited for outstanding airmanship and courage on successful and important missions in the Vietnam conflict under hazardous conditions.

Sept. 3, 1917 – CITY BREVITIES
The names Lincoln, Washington and Jefferson have been inscribed on the school buildings which were formerly the Humbird, Southmayd, and Defenbach buildings.
Smoke which has hung like a pall over the city for weeks was blown away by a high wind last night. For the first time in many days neighboring mountains can be seen in full outline.

R.M. LEUSCH BECOMES MR. GOOD
Judge Flynn Wednesday granted a petition of Robert Moore Leusch, a Sandpoint man, to have his name changed by court decree to Robert Moore Good. Leusch in his petition recited that he was 34 years of age and that the name of Leusch “caused him great personal annoyance and inconvenience and trouble in business, owing to the origin of and peculiar spelling and pronunciation of the same.” Leusch testified few people could rightly spell his name.
