Onset of fall brings BCGA Fall Horticulture Workshop Series

| September 7, 2017 1:00 AM

Wednesday, September 13 heralds the beginning of the annual Bonner County Gardeners Association Fall Horticulture Workshop Series.

Though the first class will be at a different time and venue, remaining classes will be held on Wednesday evenings from 6-8 p.m. at the Ponderay Events Center, 401 Bonner Mall Way, Suite F. The series will cover all the aspects of fall garden work and information to help with it into next spring’s activities. Schedule is as follows:

- Sept. 16 – 3-5 p.m.: Composting by Ann Warwick – an afternoon visit to Warwick’s home at 768 Samuels Road where she will demonstrate first-hand the building and maintaining of a compost system, the uses of compost and what it consists of. A co-presenter, Janae Dale, will provide a “show and tell” about “red wigglers” – aka worms – in compost and gardening.

- Sept. 27: Garden Weeds by Marrion Newsom-Banks – Marrion will provide information on identifying various weeds and their life cycles, as well as ideas on eliminating troublesome noxious plants.

- Oct. 4: Straw Bale Gardening and Building a Home Greenhouse by Janene Grende and Brenda Hill – Attendees will learn how to grow produce and flowers in straw bales successfully. Also, they will explain step by step how they built a greenhouse and how you can too.

- Oct. 11: Micro-Climates by Sean Mitzel – A microclimate is a “climate within a climate” and is determined by a multitude of factors. In north Idaho, it’s crucial to understand this concept for successful gardening. Class members will learn some of these factors and modification techniques to accentuate your microclimate.

- Oct. 18: Pesticides in the Garden by Bob Wilson – Bob will help gardeners discover when the use of pesticides for insect and/or disease control is appropriate and when they’re not. He will include safety information and examples of which chemicals are useful for various problems. Time will be allowed to address specific problems that class attendees are experiencing in their gardens.

Classes are $10 each per person attending and will begin promptly at 6 p.m. Check-in starts at 5:30 p.m. and it is requested that everyone be on time. Fees may be paid in advance or by check or cash at individual classes or on line by Pay-Pal. Make checks to: Bonner County Gardeners Association and bring or send to the Bonner Mall Way address listed previously.
