The U.S. Forest Service was established by Congress after the Great Fire of 1910 destroyed thousands of square miles of forests, homes, and towns in Washington, Idaho, and Montana.
Their charter was to manage the forests to prevent a similar conflagration in the future. Based on the events of the past few summers I’d say that they aren’t doing a very good job. It’s time for some new thinking about forest management like, oh, I don’t know, actually utilizing the resource as it was intended? They have become the vanguard for the tree huggers who want preservation, not utilization. Until that changes fires, smoke, and destruction are the new normal just like it used to be. Thanks, USFS. Do your job.
