I agree with a lot of Jim Kelly’s letter (Daily Bee, Sept. 5, 2017) rebuting Ryan Luttmann’s letter to the public on Sandpoint’s street revisions.
Not all, though, can be laid at Mr. Luttmann’s door. According to the previous Public Works Director, Kody Van Dyk, some of this can be laid at the Idaho Transportation Department’s feet. Supposedly, the fiasco of Pine Street, etc., is what the state decreed. Hey, who lives in this town? Certainly not the “engineers” representing the state.
I do agree that there were many effects of the traffic redesign not taken into consideration. The First Avenue debacle can be seen in the incoming traffic on First Avenue backed up around the corner to at least the Conoco. The insane one block one way on Pine. The new traffic light at Fifth and Church which (most mornings for me) takes two to three lights to get through on Church. Creeping out into traffic to try to see around diagonally parked cars … one of my personal favorites.
Come on, city of Sandpoint. Whose town is this? Return the public streets to the public who use them (not the goofy dream of altruistic engineers) and fix this insanity. The wtate should not decree how we, the citizens of this beautiful city, use our streets.
