Back to basics at POAC Gallery

| September 15, 2017 1:00 AM

As every student in the Kaleidoscope Art Education program could tell you, all artwork is built upon the seven elements of arts: line, shape, color, value, form, space, and texture. These essential elements are investigated throughout the upcoming exhibit at the POAC Gallery, 302 N First Ave., opening on Friday, Sept. 15 with a reception from 5:30 to 7 p.m. The public is invited to attend at no charge.

The Pend Oreille Arts Council narrows in on the elements of art in two ways during “The Line That Binds Us.” Part of the exhibit focuses on local women artists who draw with charcoal, colored pencil, or mixed media. In their drawings, see the line and composition that usually form the backbone of a work of art. The second half of the show is a collection of black and white photography and paintings.

“Black-and-white photography is classic, originally the only way to make a photographic image. You pay more attention to the shapes, the line and value,” Carol Deaner, POAC president, said. “Painting in black and white, on the other hand, can be a technical challenge for the artists, because they can’t rely on color to evoke their message.”

Arts Administrator Hannah Combs added, “Working with the elements of art is a fine balance, a give and take that every artist interprets in their own way. It’s all about the decisions of what to add and what to do without.”
