DAR reminds all to cherish the Constitution

Daughters of the American Revolution, Wild Horse Trail Chapter, offers a remind to celebrate Constitution Week, Sept. 17-23.

“The unity of government which constitutes you one people is also now dear to you. It is justly so, for it is the main pillar in the edifice of your tranquility at home, your peace abroad; of your safety; of your prosperity; of that very liberty, which you so highly prize.” George Washington, Farewell Address 1796.

In Washington’s final address as president, he offered his last guidance to the citizens of the United States. He emphasized the significance of the union that bound all Americans as one people and granted their freedom and prosperity. Washington further states his support for the new constitutional government. He believed it was an improvement upon the nation’s original attempt in the Articles of Confederation. Washington reminds the people that it is the right of the people of a nation to change the government, but only through constitutional amendments. He goes on to emphasize this belief by arguing that we must avoid an overthrow of the government at any price. Washington held that it is the obligation of every member of the nation to obey the Constitution and to yield to the laws of the government until the majority of the American people constitutionally amend it. This part of the farewell address gives us insight to how he believed in and cherished the Constitution.

We, the citizens of the United States, have the opportunity to celebrate Constitution Week, September 17-23. It is an occasion for us to cherish the Constitution. It is a time for remembering the Founding Fathers and the gifts of Life, Liberty, Freedom, and Prosperity given to us. The 116 days the Founding Fathers spent in 1787 have given our country 230 years of freedoms. It is our responsibility to honor Constitution Week.
