Wampus Cats start fast in sweep of Knights

PLUMMER — Sophomore Ellie Kiebert hammered six aces to go with four kills and five digs, and Brooke Stevens ran the offense with 32 set assists and two aces, as the Wampus Cats swept the Lakeside Knights 25-5, 25-23, 26-24 in North Star League volleyball Tuesday night in Plummer.
Hailey Bristol ripped 11 kills to lead the attack, as the Wampus Cats (8-2, 4-0 NSL) started fast in a decisive first set after head coach Cindy Derr tinkered with the starting lineup.
“First game, the attitude was there. Second game we struggled,” she said. “Lakeside didn’t earn a lot of points, but we gave them a lot of points.”
Derr praised the back row play of Alleehia Valliere and Abby Anderson, and felt Ellie Lambert stepped up with leadership. Kiebert tallied six aces for the second match in a row, doing some damage on her service runs.
“She just has the power behind it. She’ll finish off games with jump serving,” described Derr, who felt her team improved greatly in a loss to 5A Post Falls JV on Monday. “I think it was a good prep match for this weekend against Genesis Prep. We’re coming together piece by piece.”

n Trojans JV sweeps Wampus Cats (late)
POST FALLS — Brooke Stevens tallied 15 assists, three kills, six digs and two aces, and Ellie Kiebert five kills, but it wasn’t enough as Clark Fork fell 25-12, 25-22, 25-15 to the Post Falls JV on Monday in nonleague volleyball at Post Falls High School.
“I was pleased that we were able to lay with them tonight,” praised Wampus Cats head coach Cindy Derr. “As I explained to the girls tonight, Post Falls had 1,800 students in their school and we have 125.”
Hailey Bristol, Grace Shelton and Ali Sutton each had three kills, and Ellie Lambert four digs for the Cats (7-2) in defeat.
“We just couldn’t cover the holes where they hit and stuffed with short serves,” said Derr. “It was good to play though as they had a couple tall girls and hit right side a lot.”
n Bulldogs fall to Bears
MOSCOW — Sandpoint dropped to 0-2 in 4A Inland Empire League volleyball after a loss at Moscow late Tuesday night. “It was a battle. We had a hard time putting balls away against Moscow’s back row,” said Bulldogs head coach Erin Roos. “Kaitlan (Ward) had a great night defensively and serve-receiving. The Graces (Hicks and Kirscher) put up some huge blocks as well. We had leads in every set, but relaxed too much and didn’t finish the job.”

Sandpoint’s scheduled game at Lewiston last Saturday was postponed. The Bulldogs are at Post Falls tonight in a tri-match with Mt. Spokane.
