Autumn has arrived, but so has fall's fun factor
SANDPOINT — Fall has fallen, but the fun factor is on the rise this week. The Angels Over Sandpoint anniversary dance is a big event to catch, but so are the art openings, great films, comedy shows, community gatherings and a whole lot more.
We’d best take a look:
Thursday, Sept. 21
‘Rooted in Peace’
Venue: Panida Theater, 300 N. First Ave., in Sandpoint.
Time: 7 p.m.
In celebration of the upcoming International Day of Peace, the Panida is hosting Greg Reitman’s ‘Rooted in Peace’ — a globally transformative, socially conscious, environmentally based film. Reitman’s journey of self-analysis resonates with audiences seeking inner peace in a world full of people dominated by war, affected by global warming or haunted by inner conflict. The film follows Greg as he speaks to thought leaders around the world having conversations around sustainable development, discussing the challenges of our never-ending wars, and facing the realities of uncertainty placed on the world’s institutions by our current political climate. Reitman’s introspective and socially relevant documentary was most recently screened at the United Nations.

POAC Art Exhibit Opening
Venue: Sandpoint Center (Columbia Bank Atrium), 414 Church St., in Sandpoint.
Time: 5:30-7:30 p.m.
Join the Pend Oreille Arts Council at the Sandpoint Center for the autumn artists’ reception featuring over thirty local artists. ‘Visions of a Bigger World’ encourages investigating a global perspective with images inspired by places outside of the Panhandle. The North Idaho Plein Air Painters have a special display in Tango Café, featuring this year’s results of their long summer days of outdoor painting. Refreshments provided by Tango Café. ‘All Saints’

‘All Saints’ is based on the inspiring true story of salesman-turned-pastor Michael Spurlock (John Corbett), the tiny church he was ordered to shut down, and a group of refugees from Southeast Asia. Together, they risked everything to plant seeds for a future that might just save them all. Steve Gomer’s fine fact-based, faith-based film showcases a career-highlight performance by John Corbett.

Rock the 219 Night at
Venue: 219 Lounge, 219 First Ave., in Sandpoint.
Time: 9 p.m.
Three Pacific Northwest bands in one legendary night! Von The Baptist, a Spokane favorite with a broad-based Northwest following, creates swirling psychedelic rock with dynamics that range from whisper quiet to ear-blisteringly loud.
Van Eps, a mainstay in the Seattle rock scene since 2006 has a unique sound often described as having a ‘classic feel’ with a ‘modern edge,’ with arrangements showcasing their broad, stylistic range.
Trash Dogs combines a love for ’80s punk and ’70s country. Brothers Matt and Johnny Wade create a backdrop perfect for swigging a pint while you bob your head and tap your feet. This Seattle band offers ear-catching hooks and classic rock vocals that will leave you smiling and entertained.

Harold’s IGA

Harold’s IGA is an indie rock band with an ever-changing cast of characters. They play a ton of originals from their three albums and a host of amazing covers.

Ron Kieper Trio at Pend d’Oreille Winery
Venue: Pend d’Oreille Winery, 301 Cedar St., in Sandpoint.
Time: 5-8 p.m.
Come hang out for a pleasant evening with this talented instrumental crew.

Saturday, Sept. 23
Angels Over Sandpoint 20th Anniversary Dance
Venue: Dover Bay ‘Homestead Barn’ in West Dover Bay
Time: 6-10 p.m.
Here’s a chance to celebrate two decades of service as the Angels Over Sandpoint celebrate 20 years of giving back to the community. This dance features the original Atomic Blues Band, which has been playing for Angels’ dances since way back when. Along with great music and dancing, there will be a fun, funky and stylish silent auction.

Ponderay Neighbor Day
Venue: Behind the Hoot Owl Restaurant on Hwy. 200, in Ponderay.
Time: 3-7 p.m.
Here’s a free, family friendly community event that you’ll want to take in, as Ponderay gets together under the theme, ‘Celebrating Our Connections.’ Lots of kids’ activities, craft and food vendors, live music by the Miah Kohal Band, pony rides and a chance to win a free tethered hot air balloon ride! You’ll also get to meet Curious George. The SPOT bus is running special routes in Kootenai and Ponderay from 2:30-7:30 p.m. to make it even easier to attend.

Stand-Up Comedy Show
Venue: 219 Lounge, 219 First Ave., in Sandpoint.
Time: Doors open at 7:30 p.m., show starts at 8 p.m.
Come enjoy stand-up comedy featuring Nathan Brannon, on tour from Los Angeles with Fred Bowski and Morgan Preston for one night only of hilarious stand-up comedy and stories you won’t want to miss! Brannon is a Portland native who recently relocated to Los Angeles and was the winner of the prestigious Seattle International Comedy Competition in 2014. DJ Josh will be spinning tunes on the outdoor patio immediately after the show ‘til midnight.

Monday, Sept. 25
Friends of Scotchman Peak Wilderness Pirate Crew Cruise
Venue: Kramer’s Marina, Hope.
Time: 4 p.m.
The grand privateer Shawnodese will welcome Friends of Scotchman Peaks Wilderness aboard for some piratical fun, fancy food and delectable drink on the eastern expanse of Lake Pend Oreille. The FSPW Pirate Crews will cross the plank to the Shawnodese at Kramer’s Marina in Hope for an evening cruise, during which they will enjoy gourmet grub and first class grog provided by FSPW staff within view of the Scotchman rampart, as well as stories of the inland sea known as Pend Oreille related by Shawnodese first mate Linda Mitchell.
The Shawnodese will set out for a voyage ’round the horn of the Hope Peninsula and a foray into the green jungle of the Clark Fork River delta, passing near the Port of Johnson Creek. As the ship rolls across the (gentle) waves of Pend Oreille, the decks may well run red with the light of a lovely Idaho sunset (no guarantees, of course).
