Stevens returns as CF falls at home to Potlach

CLARK FORK — Senior quarterback Wade Stevens returned from a broken wrist and nose sustained in a motorcycle accident three weeks ago, showing leadership and toughness, but the Wampus Cats could not break through for the win in a 34-20 loss to Potlach on Friday night in a nonleague football game much closer than the score.

“We were down one score with two minutes left, and they busted off a touchdown on a 4th down run,” lamented Cats’ head coach Brian Arthun, whose team surrendered several key plays on defense to turn the game. “We had him wrapped up. They were pretty physical.”

Josh Constantin scored on runs of 37 and 16 yards, and Stevens scored the third touchdown on a 30 yard scamper for the Cats (1-3).

Potlach also scored on a 70 yard touchdown pass right at the end of the first half, and on a big 4th and 10 pass, which coupled with the final score makes three touchdowns that swung the game.

Toben Pincher had two interceptions to lead the defense, which also got a boost when Stevens returned to free safety.

“He made such a big difference, with his leadership on the field. He had a big game running the ball,” described Arthun of this senior signal caller. “The boys look up to him, it was nice to have him out there. He’s a really tough kid to come back after a broken wrist on his throwing arm.”

Arthun can find solace in the fact his team matched up physically with Potlach, but a few big plays proved the difference.

“Theo Icardo was his usual self, delivering some big hits among his 12 tackles,” said Arthun. “Take away three or four plays, especially that 70 yard touchdown pass right at the end of the first half, and it’s a different game.”
