Sept. 24, 1967 — NEW YORKER HAS IDEA

Foresters everywhere, pay attention - the solution to forest fires may have at last been found. In a Sept. 6 letter to the New York Post, Mrs. Anna Lion writes, “I am greatly dismayed by the terrible destruction of so many western forest fires. In early spring before the hot dry spell arrives, could not forest rangers train a volunteer or paid civilian brigade to water down areas that have no rainfall and (where) forest fires appear imminent? Employing youthful jobseekers or supplementing welfare recipients’ income could be a related benefit and would encourage many people to join such a squad.”

DR. BIRD GIVES RESUSCITATION AIDS

Gifts of incalculable value were received last week by members of the Sandpoint police and fire departments, the Sheriff’s office and Bonner General Hospital when Dr. Forest Bird, Palm Springs, Calif., presented each with a portable emergency resuscitator and gave the hospital a Bird Medical Respirator. Dr. Bird, a frequent Sandpoint visitor, designed both devices.

The hospital medical respirator has been adapted for stretcher use in Vietnam where it is saving approximately 86 percent of men whose lungs are punctured, compared with 95 percent lost during the Korean and other wars.

Sept. 24, 1917 — CITY BREVITIES

What is virtually a new residence is being built by Dr. O.F. Page to take the place of the Page cottage next to the hospital. Improvements include a handsome veranda, brick finishing, a brick fireplace in the new living room and a spacious basement. The improvement is the most notable of the summer building and will be a fine addition to the city.

W.H. Davis and family left Wednesday by automobile for Saticoy, Calif., to spend the winter. Mr. Davis has had to seek a change of climate because of rheumatism and will have the benefit of springs near Saticoy for his ailment.

WOOD PAVING

Cities all over the country not conveniently located to the natural timber are paving their streets with wood blocks. While it may be several years before Sandpoint does more paving it is a rightful contention of the producers of native products that some paved streets in Sandpoint should be of wooden blocks. It would be a good advertisement for the chief product of this community and apparently would be the best paving that could be procured.
