Idaho State Police have released more details on Tuesday’s fatal officer-involved shooting of a Coolin real estate agent.

State police said deputies were asked to conduct a welfare check on Craig A. Johnson, 50, by his wife, Robin Johnson on Sunday. Police say she had been trying to contact him and he was not returning her phone calls. When a deputy arrived at the home at 11:54 p.m., Craig Johnson immediately confronted the deputy by pointing a handgun at him and threatening him.

A $30,000 felony warrant for aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer was subsequently issued for Mr. Johnson’s arrest.

During service of the warrant on Tuesday morning, Craig Johnson exited his residence with a loaded handgun and confronted deputies by pointing a handgun at them, forcing them to respond with deadly force. Johnson was injured and medical attention was rendered. A ground ambulance was attempting to rendezvous with an air ambulance, but he died en route, state police said.

The deputies involved were not injured and have been placed on paid administrative leave, per standard protocol, pending the North Idaho Critical Incident Task Force investigation’s outcome.

The deputy who shot Craig Johnson has been identified as Sgt. Shawn Deem, who has been with Bonner County Sheriff’s Office for eight and a half years.
