Leave your spuds undug till spring
Fred L. Stegner and John Hammeren, who live on the peninsula, dug 35 sacks of fine potatoes for Monroe Smith. Nine were frozen, although the thermometer registered 25 below zero for a couple days this past winter. Mr. Stegner stated that the ground where packed solid was frozen hard but the potato ground was loose and honeycombed with ice, but the ground underneath was not frozen. What more could be desired of a country? If conditions are not right for digging spuds in the fall, let them go till spring.
