Slaveck, Seifert notch wins in loss to GSL Mead

SPOKANE — Sophomore Jenny Slaveck and junior Alana Seifert notched impressive wins in girls singles, leading the short-handed Bulldogs in a 9-2 loss to Greater Spokane League tennis power Mead on Wednesday in Spokane.

Slaveck was sharp in a straight set win at No. 2 girls singles, while Seifert had to work much harder to pull off her win at No. 3 singles, grinding out a 6-2, 6-7 (7-5), (10-7) win.

“Jenny was impressive in a solid 6-1, 6-2 thrashing. Her big first serve was basically unhittable,” praised Bulldog head coach Kent Anderson. “Alana fought through a difficult third set tie-breaker to win. Alana suffered calf cramps in the final tie-breaker during her two-hour match but was able to finish after a 10 minute medical timeout. Her consistent ground strokes and serve were the difference.”

Allura Livingston nearly pulled off a huge win at No. 1 girls singles, but fell 10-5 in a third set super-tie-breaker. It was Mead’s fifth match of the season, and the Bulldogs’ first official match after their opener was rained out.

“Finally we get a match in. Spring break matches are always a challenge, but for the kids who are available it’s a great learning experience,” claimed Anderson. “We were missing five of our top nine girls and three of our top nine boys, so the match-ups were a little difficult.”

Anderson praised the play of freshman Christian Story, who just missed earning the only boys win after losing a tough 11-9 third set tie-breaker.

“Christian played like a veteran at No. 4 singles even though it was the first high school singles match of his life,” described Anderson. “Overall it was a great opportunity for the team to gauge where they need to be in a month when districts arrive. We’ll be fine.”

Sandpoint is at Lake City on Wednesday.
