April 15, 1968 — RATHBUN SALUTED
Emma Rathbun, Clark Fork, is saluted as an “unusual Methodist” in the April issue of “Together”, the denomination’s general interest magazine that goes into almost three-quarters of a million homes monthly.
She and her late husband, Robert, a Methodist minister, purchased the general store in Clark Fork in 1956. She still operates it enterprisingly and efficiently. Proof of this is her selection as 1964 Grocer of the Year and her serving as a director of the Idaho Food Dealers for the last eight years.
A lifelong reader, when she took over the store she found out that the town had no library, so before long the well-stocked emporium for groceries, soft goods and hardware became also a bustling library, to which eager and appreciative borrowers, young and adults, flocked from a radius of 25 miles.
The Rathbun store library is a major community asset, for school teachers send pupils there for special assignments. The borrowing is in such steady volume that the proprietor engaged Mrs. Donald W. Baldwin, wife of the Methodist pastor, to serve as part-time librarian.
Devoted to her church, she has taught Sunday school all her adult life. Active in the Clark Fork Rod and Gun Club, she raises quail and pheasants, but never hunts.

We must not overlook the fact that the Third Liberty Loan campaign is now on, and as the poster says, “If you can’t go and fight, buy a bond.”
A new flag was unfurled Sunday on the Northern Pacific flag staff. The flag is one of the largest in the county, measuring 15 by 20 feet.

SCHOOL TEACHER CARRIES GUN
Miss Iva Mason, teacher in district No. 17, Newport precinct, has been threatened by pro-Germans of the school district who have made life miserable for her since she made complaint against a man for pro-German utterances. Miss Mason writes that she is carrying a revolver and intends to protect herself from any interfering.

CITY BREVITIES
The first electrical storm of the season occurred Monday afternoon. The spring shower freshened up the lawns.
The local Red Cross chapter has been informed from national headquarters that 100 picked men are needed as ambulance drivers for the Italian front. Men of over draft age or men who have been turned down in the draft for slight physical disabilities are taken in this service.
Complaint is still being heard that many soldiers’ dependents are not yet receiving their monthly allowance from the government.
