Lamanna retires

The Lamanna Law Firm invites residents to attend the retirement open house party to say farewell and express their appreciation to Attorney Nick Lamanna, who has been devoted to public good and service in the community since 1973. Born in Newport but raised in Priest River, Lamanna went on after high school to receive his B.A. from Gonzaga University in 1963 and Gonzaga University in 1973. He was admitted to the Idaho Bar in 1973 and to the U.S. Supreme Court in 1978 before practicing law in his hometown.

March was wetter than normal

Weather for March 1988 shows precipitation was 118 percent of normal. A total of 3.25 inches was measured, compared to 2.75 in a normal year. Highest one-day temperature in March was 59 degrees, The record is 70, set in 1992. The one-day low was 17 in 1988, minus 18 in 1945.

DAW takes strike vote

Members of the International Woodworkers Union took a strike authorization vote in Coeur d’ Alene, Newport (Albeni Falls) and Sandpoint. Fred Bair, union negotiator, said results won’t be known until later. The DAW contract ends July 1.

40 Years Ago — 1978

Two sentenced in murder conspiracy

Two Priest River men were sentenced to serve one year in the Bonner County Jail after pleading guilty to charges of conspiracy to commit murder. Timothy Pinkney and Harry White, both 21, pleaded guilty in Judge Dar Cogswell’s First Judicial District Court to conspiring to murder Bonner County Sheriff’s Deputy Doug Bradbury with a 12-gauge shotgun on Sept. 20, 1977.

50 Years Ago — 1968

Fire destroys dry kiln

A spectacular fire of undetermined origin (on April 16) completely destroyed the dry kiln building located on the Kaniksu Lumber Co. property on Bodie Canyon Road. The kiln was owned by the U. S. Lumber Co. and operated by Laurence Nelson and Jack Fuher. The loss was estimated at $75,000 and was covered by insurance.

Judges named for contest

Judges for the first annual Miss Priest River contest announced this week are Mrs. Carolyn Williamson, owner of the Drezden Modeling Studio, Mr. James Adams of the Virgil A. Warren Advertising Agency, and Mr. Harold Raymond, manager the Spokane Coca-Cola Bottling Company. Williamson and Adams are representatives of the Spokane Chamber of Commerce, and Raymond is a member of the Lilac Festival Committee.

Log drive to be filmed

Reports are that the annual log drive will be filmed by a moving picture company and distributed by Paramount as a short subject.

Anselmo purchases best bull calf

With the purchase of two outstanding purebred Shorthorn bulls by Brown Brothers of Sandpoint and Frank H. Anselmo, Priest River, local Shorthorn cattle breeders are making history for this section of Idaho. Anselmo purchased the best bull calf among 17 fine sires offered for sale.

Dalkena hires new manager

Ed Dalva is the new manager of the Dalkena Lumber Co. Mr. Dalva is also employed by the Kaniksu Boom.

100 Years Ago — 1918

Mining and lumberjack advances

- J. W. Lloyd took two more men up to his Camp Bird Mine. This will mean a crew of four men at work there. It is rumored that things are “looking up” at the mine.
