Pull up a chair and kick back with weekend's fun

SANDPOINT – Of you didn’t catch ‘Shrek – The Musical’ at SHS last week, don’t miss it this weekend. Fabulous production!

Right Front Burner gets funky on Friday at the 219 and Sandpoint’s own Holly McGarry is back in town for a show Saturday night at MickDuff’s Beer Hall. On Sunday, we have a couple of cool Earth Day themed events and Tuesday night, the Music Conservatory of Sandpoint has a special concert at the Panida.

Thursday, April 19

‘Shrek – The Musical’

Venue: Sandpoint High School Auditorium, 410 S. Division St., in Sandpoint.

Time: 7 p.m. (Additional shows on April 20 and 21)

‘Once upon a time, in a far away swamp ....’ Take a funny story, add music and a sprinkling of dance and voila – you have a musical theater production.

Add in about 70 Sandpoint-area children as well as a good number of talented adults and you have magic! ‘Shrek – the Musical,’ presented by Growing Dreams Productions Inc. and Sandpoint High School Mime & Masque, takes the stage in the SHS auditorium.

Admission: $12 adult, $10 children 10 and under; except for the Family Matinee on April 14 ($7 children) and Student Discount Show on April 19 (students 18 and under $10). Tickets available on Brown Paper Tickets, Eve’s Leaves and from cast members.

Wyatt Wood

Venue: MickDuff’s Beer Hall, 220 Cedar St., in Sandpoint.

Time: 6:30 p.m.

The Thursday night solo music series features Spokane Valley native Wyatt Wood. With more than 15 years of music experience and an education in Music Production, Wyatt is doing what he knows best, playing tunes for fans. Come out and hear his originals and take in this Inland Northwest talent before he goes on tour.

Admission: Free for those 21 and over.

Friday, April 20

This is Sandpoint’s funk, disco, rock and groove band – arguably the funkiest trio you’ll see in the Inland Northwest – whose years of music experience shines through with every glistening note. With the power to make any booty shake, Right Front Burner is here to help you get your groove on!

Kaleidoscope Art Exhibit

Venue: POAC Office, upstairs on the Cedar Street Bridge, First & Cedar, in Sandpoint.

Time: 5:30-7 p.m.

This reception is a great opportunity to see all of the hard work our Kaleidoscope volunteers and their students have accomplished this year, which marks the 21st annual show. This student work features grades 3 -6.

Admission: Free and open to the public.

Extreme Pleinair Artists’ Reception

Venue: Evans Brothers Coffee Roasters, in Sandpoint

Time: 5:30 p.m. (Art is on display through May 10)

This artists’ reception features some of the Friends of Scotchman Peaks Wilderness ‘Extreme Pleinair’ artists, including painters Ed Robinson of Sandpoint, Aaron Johnson of Moscow and photographers Joe Foster of Connecticut and Marjolein Groot Nibbelink of Sandpoint.

Each summer for the past nine years (with the exception of 2015, when fires kept hikers out of the Scotchmans), Friends of Scotchman Peaks has led artists into the heart of the Scotchmans to paint them ‘from the inside out.’ After the first such expedition, the hike became known as ‘The Extreme Pleinair.’

Admission: Free and open to the public. No host bar and coffee galore will be on hand. A portion of the coffee proceeds will be donated to FSPW. Light appetizers also provided.

Venue: Pend d’Oreille Winery, 301 Cedar St., in Sandpoint.

Time: 5-8 p.m.

A regional favorite shares songs and stories in the tasting room.

Admission: Free and open to the public.

The Groove Black

Venue: MickDuff’s Beer Hall, 220 Cedar St., in Sandpoint.

Time: 6:30 p.m.

The Groove Black is a trio of dynamic longtime Sandpoint locals: Brandon Watterson on guitar and lead vocals, Jason Stoddard on bass and accompanying vocals and KC Carter with the percussion. This team is up to the task and the task to make you dance.

Bum Jungle

Venue: Eichardt’s Pub, 212 Cedar St., in Sandpoint.

Time: 7-10 p.m.

Brian Jacobs

‘Hauntingly beautiful folk music with soul’ - That’s what Holly McGarry is all about. This Sandpoint local is back in town and would like to see some friendly faces. Check out this intimate Saturday night show at the MickDuff’s Beer Hall. Minors welcome for the first set (roughly until 7:30-8 p.m.) if accompanied by a legal guardian.

Devon Wade

Venue: 219 Lounge, 219 First Ave., in Sandpoint.

Time: 9 p.m.

Enjoy top 40’s country rock with one of Idaho’s top country rock stars, Sandpoint’s very own Devon Wade. Bring your dancing shoes and kick up your heels as Devon rocks the Niner.

Sand Creek Cleanup

Venue: City Beach boat launch, Sandpoint City Beach.

Time: 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

What better way to celebrate Earth Day than to help spruce up City Beach and the Sand Creek Corridor? All are welcome to join in to help collect litter, debris and micro-trash from City Beach and along the Sand Creek path. This event is rain or shine. Co-sponsored by the City of Sandpoint and Lake Pend Oreille Waterkeeper, who will provide all the cleanup supplies needed plus yummy refreshments.

Monday, April 23

Missoula Children’s Theatre ‘Aladdin’ auditions

Venue: Farmin-Stidwell Elementary gym, 1626 Spruce St., in Sandpoint.

Time: 3:30-5:30 p.m.

Auditions for Missoula Children’s Theatre production of ‘Aladdin’ will be followed this same evening by the first rehearsal.

There are roles available for students in grades K-12. Students must be at least 5 years old to participate. Students wishing to audition should arrive by the scheduled starting time and plan to stay for the entire two-hour session. The first rehearsal begins approximately 30 minutes after the auditions.

It is a group audition – no advance preparation is necessary, but a smile never hurts. Kids should just be ready to come and have a good time.

Rehearsals will be conducted every day, April 23-26, from 3:30 to 8:00 p.m. at Farmin-Stidwell School, and on April 27, at the Panida Theater.

‘Children Performing for Children’

Venue: Panida Theater, 300 N. First Ave., in Sandpoint.

Celebrate with more than 100 local ‘Music Matters!’ students, ages 7-18, as they perform the works of Tchaikovsky. This one-hour, family friendly concert is perfect for listeners of any age and a great way to support the ‘Music Matters!’ after-school outreach programs of the Music Conservatory of Sandpoint.
