100 Years Ago—1918

School faculty announced

At a meeting of the village school board, teachers for the 1918-19 school year were announced as follows: Principal, Miss Cecile Harlow; assistant principal Miss Clara B. Hutson of Beatrice, Neb; Grade teachers, Miss Irene Danforth and Miss Harriet Neergard; and Primary, Miss Ella Hart of Clinton, Neb.

90 Years Ago — 1928

Scenic drive to open up

Mrs. Addie Kinyon of Nordman was in Priest River — the first trip she had made to our town since last summer, not being able to come oftener because the running of the post office and store keeps them real busy.

Mrs. Kinyon reports it is expected that the Sullivan Loop will be connected to Nordman this summer.

This will open up a very scenic drive when completed, and with much more tourist travel expected.

80 Years Ago — 1938

CCC boys arrive

One hundred CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) boys from Nebraska arrived in Priest River last week as replacements for Camp 164. The next contingent of 79 boys is expected on April 23 and will serve as replacements at either Camp 102 or 127. They will come from New York State.

70 Years Ago — 1948

Freedom Train brings “Freedom Days”

The Freedom Train assigned to North Idaho will be in Coeur d’Alene April 10-14.

All towns are asked to observe the days as “Freedom Days.” Noon fire sirens and other noise apparatus will sound a signal for all to rededicate themselves to the heritage that made America great, Freedom. On Sunday, April 11, all churches have been asked to have a service on the heritage theme. Monday, April 12, will be observed as “School Day,” with a special flag service of rededication and singing of patriotic songs.

60 Years Ago — 1958

Queen to be crowned at ball

The official hostess for Priest River will be selected Saturday, April 26, on the merits of poise, personality, speaking ability and appearance and will be crowned at the semi-formal Coronation Ball at the high school gym that evening.

The candidates will be introduced at 9:30 p.m. and two princesses announced. Crowning of Miss Priest River will be by Miss Clara Erickson of Post Falls, Miss Greater Spokane.

50 Years Ago — 1968

Booster Club scholarship winners named

Ron Kerl and Steve Booth had the honor or receiving the first two scholarships awarded by the Spartan Booster Club at its first annual awards dinner in the high school gym.

Athletic trophy winners were Steve Anselmo for basketball, Steve Booth for track, Greg Sather for football, and Dennis Veltri, inspirational leadership and sportsmanship. Coaches Clarence Dahl and Nick Lamanna introduced their players.

40 Years Ago — 1978

Peters named new editor

John Peters, 45, was named as editor and general manager of the Priest River Times, according to Pete Thompson, Times publisher. Peters will replace Hosey Horton, 42, editor since June 1997.

30 Years Ago — 1988

Spartans ice IML title

The Priest River Lamanna High school boys’ golf team clinched the Intermountain League championship by winning match play Saturday. The golf team consisted of Dawes Marlatt, who shot a team-best round of 79; Chris Martin, 81; Casey Tharp and Chris Blayne, each at 82.The team had four of the top six finishers.

20 Years Ago — 1998

Idaho Hill School in state’s top 15

The Bonner County School Board saw a paper-making demonstration by a team of Idaho Hill Elementary students Tuesday night, and applauded the designation of the school “as one of the top 15 schools in the state by the Idaho Education Association.

10 Years Ago — 2008

New Junior Miss trio named

Amber Trost was named the 2008 Priest River Junior Miss Saturday night. Andie Flavel was first runner-up, and Shelby Owens second runner-up.
