Shayla Martinez was the top point earner for the girls with 23 points, running on three 3rd place relays as well as finishing 4th in the triple jump.

The Spartans also hosted Bonners Ferry, Kellogg and Coeur d’Alene Charter in an Intermountain League double dual prior to the invitational, with several Spartans winning events.

“We would like to thank all of the 30 or so volunteers that helped out at the two meets last week,” said Spartan track coach Jared Hughes. “We had a lot of compliments on how well the meet was run and this is a testament to our outstanding volunteers.”

n Spartans seeking first baseball win

PRIEST RIVER — The Spartans played some of their best baseball of the season, but came up short recently, falling 4-0 and 5-0 to Kellogg in IML action.

Jantzen Lucas and Justin Allbee combined on a no-hitter in defeat, with Jantzen striking out 10 against one walk in five innings, and Caden Brennan was a bright spot in the other loss for the Spartans (0-10, 0-5 IML), striking out seven and keeping his team in the game. Konner Johnson had two hits and double in one of the games, and Gavin Rodgers had a hit, but offense continues to be tough to come by for the Spartans.

“We really fought hard this game, our pitching was great,” said head coach Mark Schultz of the no-hit loss. “Offensively, we didn’t get the job done at the plate. We had some opportunities to score, didn’t get the big hit. We had some good swings, just right at people.”

The 3A IML is loaded this year, with both Bonners Ferry and Timberlake owning wins over a solid 4A Sandpoint team, making wins scarce.

“We really played well enough to get a couple of wins, just not playing complete games. My hats off to all our pitchers,” said Schultz. “We need to play a complete game, pitching, defense, and offense. We get a few balls to drop, good things will happen.”

Coal Stevens, Cameron Reeves, Lathe Moran, Gavin Rogers, Jantzen Lucas, Cole Thompson and Larry Naccarato each had hits in a 15-0, 11-2 doubleheader sweep at the hands Timberlake.

n Martin, Johnson hit home runs for Spartans

PRIEST RIVER — Tawny Nichols struck out seven in a complete game win and Jasmine Martin ripped a homer and drove in three runs, leading the Spartans to a 14-5 win over Kellogg in IML softball on Saturday in the first game of a doubleheader.

Liann Kren, Tabitha Richey, Karah Fink, Emily Holbrook, Emma Johnson and Jasmine Martin, all drove in runs in an eight run third inning.

The Spartans (4-10, 2-3 IML) pounded out 15 hits, with Martin, Fink, Richey, Holbrook, Kren, and Nichols all picking up multiple hits.

In game two, the Spartans lost the lead late in a 14-9 defeat to Kellogg, which trailed 9-8 in the bottom of the sixth inning before scoring three runs. Emma Johnson went 3 for 4 and ripped a home run and two RBIs in the loss.

The Spartans lost despite out-hitting Kellogg 10 to eight. Martin took the loss for Spartans

Johnson, Martin, Nichols and Samantha Kendle all had multiple hits.

Prior to that, the Spartans lost 12-9 to Timberlake, with Natalie Randolph leading the way by lacing three doubles, while Nichols, Johnson and Martin each had a pair of the Spratans’ 10 hits. Randolph took the loss in the circle.
