Events galore heating up Red-hot August nights

SANDPOINT – Keepin’ the intro tight this week to make room for events galore.

Naturally, The Festival at Sand-point’s first week of shows is the news of the hour, but don’t forget the Long Bridge Swim, Kalispel Powwow and a free concert coming up from the Swing Street Big Band.

Here’s the skinny on it all:

Thursday, Aug. 2

Big Head Todd & The Monsters

Venue: The Festival at Sandpoint, Memorial Field, Ontario Street, in Sandpoint.

Time: Doors open at 6 p.m., show starts at 7:30 p.m.

The beloved rock band first formed as high school friends and continued through their college years, touring extensively throughout the Mountain States and West Coast of the United States in their van dubbed ‘The Colonel,’ which was driven more than 400,000 miles. Opening artist: John Craigie.

Steve Rush

Venue: MickDuff’s Beer Hall, 220 Cedar St., in Sandpoint.

Time: 6 p.m.

Steve Rush is excited to grace the stage for the Beer Hall’s Thursday Night Solo Series!

Friday, Aug. 3

Amos Lee

Venue: The Festival at Sandpoint, Memorial Field, Ontario Street, in Sandpoint.

Time: Doors open at 6 p.m., show starts at 7:30 p.m.

Lee’s musical style encompasses folk, rock and soul. Lee was born in Philadelphia and graduated from the University of South Carolina with a degree in English. After working as a schoolteacher and a bartender he began to pursue a career in music. An association with Norah Jones brought him a national audience leading to hit songs including ‘Arms of a Woman, and ‘Sweet Pea.’ Opening artist: Bailen. Admission $59.95

Devon Wade

Venue: MickDuff’s Beer Hall, 220 Cedar St., in Sandpoint.

Time: 6:30 p.m.

Devon is an independent country music artist out of Sandpoint Idaho with a strong love for what country music has always been – songs about real life. Admission: Free for those 21 and over.

Adrian Xavier

Venue: 219 Lounge, 219 First Ave., in Sandpoint.

Time: 9 p.m.

Saturday, Aug. 4

ZZ Top

Venue: The Festival at Sandpoint, Memorial Field, Ontario Street, in Sandpoint.

Time: Doors open at 6 p.m., show starts at 7:30 p.m.

ZZ Top, aka ‘That Little Ol’ Band From Texas,’ lay undisputed claim to being the longest running major rock band with original personnel intact and, in 2004,the Texas trio was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Of course, there are only three of them –Billy .F Gibbons, Dusty Hill, Frank Beard – but it’s still a remarkable achievement that they’re still very much together after almost 50 years of rock, blues, and boogie on the road and in the studio. Opening artists: Tim Montana & The Shrednecks.

Long Bridge Swim

Venue: Long Bridge over Lake Pend Oreille.

Time: Race starts at the south end of the bridge at 9 a.m.

Hundreds compete in a 1.76-mile swim across Lake Pend Oreille during 24th annual event. Information: www.longbridgeswim.org or call 208-265-2615.

Sandpoint Historic Walking Tour.

Venue: Meet outside the Panida Theater, 300 N. First Ave., in Sandpoint.

Time: 10 a.m.

Step back in time with a Walking Tour of historic downtown Sandpoint. The guided tour takes about 45 minutes and is free, but donations are welcome! Hosted by the Sandpoint Historic Preservation Commission.

Friends of the Library Used Book Sale

Venue: East Bonner County Library, 1407 Cedar St., in Sandpoint.

Time: 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

The Library is going to have a mystery lollapalooza., with all mystery paperbacks on sale at four for $1, featuring Mary Higgins Clark, Tom Clancy, John Grisham, James Patterson and Stuart Woods. They are also featuring a large collection of how-to books. Come and see the beautiful, refurbished book room.

Kalispel Tribe 43rd Annual Powwow Celebration

Venue: Kalispel Indian Reservation Powwow Grounds (across the Pend Oreille River from Usk, Wash., about 15 miles north of Newport).

Time: Buffalo Barbecue at 11 a.m.; Grand Entry at 1 and 7 p.m. – Sat., Aug. 5

It’s the best Native gathering in the region! Open to all peoples to attend and economically competitive for Native dancers and stick game tournament players, with food and craft vendors offering their wares.

First Free Saturday

Venue: Bonner County History Museum, 611 S. Ella Ave., in Sandpoint.

Time: 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

Join your friends at The Museum for a day of soaking up our rich local and regional history. The museum is always filled with fascinating exhibits, so this is a great chance to check them out if you haven’t already.

Mobius Riff

Venue: Sandpoint Farmers Market, Farmin Park, Third Ave. & Oak St., downtown Sandpoint.

Time: Market starts at 9 a.m., music from 10 a.m.-1 p.m.

It’s shaping up to be a perfect day at the Market, with ever-more local produce to choose from, great artisan work, tasty food and the sounds of Mobius Riff. Also appearing will be student musicians from the Music Conservatory of Sandpoint.

Molly Starlite & The Sputniks

Family Concert

Venue: The Festival at Sandpoint, Memorial Field, Ontario Street, in Sandpoint.

Time: Doors open at 2:30 p.m., show starts at 5 p.m.

Musical fun for the young and young at heart! The Festival presents its Family Concert featuring The Festival Community Orchestra and Studio One Dancers.

Favorite pre-concert activities include the Instrument Petting Zoo where kids can try out various instruments with guidance from musical mentors, an animal petting zoo, pony rides, clowns, face painting, games galore and the popular Parents’ Corner where moms and dads can take a break from the chaos for a complimentary mini-massage.

MCS Sounds of Summer Classical Concert

This international event features exchange students from the AUKA El Sistema Orchestra in Mexico, as well as visiting German musicians and Music Conservatory of Sandpoint students. Special performance by guest viola soloist, Mariaya Ksondyzk, from the Boston Conservatory. Light appetizers with international flair will be served. Wine available for purchase.
