GOPHERS SWEEP LITTLE LEAGUE TITLE

The Little League baseball playoff provided some interesting baseball but no real surprises as the Southern division champion Gophers used strong pitching to sweep to the league title.

The members of the championship Gopher team are Mickey Pederson, Steve Kaufman, Chris Gonzales, Dennis Pederson, Jeff Wise, Mike Longbottom, Brad Booth, Roger Hadley, Dwayne Pederson, Tom Knaggs, Allen Mahler, Ole Olson, Jim Mendenhall and Billy Bostock.

PUMP BURNED AT CONOCO STATION

Hartman’s Conoco was hit by a brief blaze on Aug. 5 costing the service station a gasoline pump and creating a snarl in the 5-6 p.m. traffic rush on Dover highway at Florence. Owner Fred Hartman said a customer’s vehicle pulled one of the pumps over and the broken wiring set it afire. He would not name the customer.

City firemen quickly put out the blaze before it reached a second pump, which was damaged by smoke. Damage was also reported to a General Telephone booth at the station.

Aug. 9, 1918 – CITY BREVITIES

Mrs. and Mrs. Chris Peterson and Mr. and Mrs. E.J. Elliott returned from a week’s camp at the Pack river headwaters. During their outing they caught 806 trout. The trip is annual event with this party, which they always begin Aug. 1.

THE STUDENT NURSE RESERVE

Unless more registrants enroll for the student nurse reserve, this county will, for the first time, fail to fill the quota asked by the government. The idea that the war may not last the full time needed to finish the training should not influence anyone against entering the reserve. The government will need every nurse it can train, not only during the war, but for years afterward. By entering a nursing school now you will release someone already qualified for service overseas and long after the war has been won there will be an unprecedented demand for the service you will then be able to render.

CHAUTAUQUA PAYS EXPENSES

The chautauqua that closed Wednesday was the most successful ever held here. Attendance was excellent and this is the first time the guarantors have not had to make up a shortage. The local organization was required to sell $1100 worth of tickets in advance and sales this year amounted to $1200. The audiences voted unanimously to repeat the event next year.
