Police identify shooting victim

SANDPOINT — The victim of a deadly shooting at the Meandering Moose on Monday has been identified as Blas Salvadore Alonzo “Duke” Dias.

Dias, 34, was slain at the apartment building at approximately 7 p.m. by an unidentified assailant who fled the scene. Sandpoint Police said in a news release on Thursday that Dias was shot once in the chest after he opened the door to the suspect, who then fled on foot.

The Meandering Moose is a former longtime hotel at the corner of U.S. Highway 2 and Marion Avenue. It is now utilized for residential use, its owner said.

Preliminary autopsy results indicate the single gunshot wound was the product of a small-caliber handgun, Sandpoint Police said. Toxicology results are pending.

A handgun believed to have been used has been recovered and it’s being sent to an Idaho State Police lab for analysis and testing, police said.

“Detectives have been interviewing and collecting DNA evidence from individuals they believe may have been involved in the shooting,” the news release said.
