Theater takes center stage in week's entertainment

SANDPOINT — Catch up on your post-Festival at Sandpoint sleep? Good thing, as we’re about to plow right into a new week of entertainment action!

Theater is rockin’ it, with the opening of the Unknown Locals’ production of ‘Blind Panic’ at the Heartwood Center, the incredible — and free! — performance of Shakespeare’s ‘Othello’ on Sunday at the fairgrounds and a country music stage show a few miles west, compliments of the Circle Moon Theater.

Plus, comedy at the Panida Little Theater, magic on the Panida’s main stage and so much more:

Thursday, Aug. 16

Leigh Guest

Venue: 219 Lounge, 219 First Ave., in Sandpoint.

Time: 8 p.m.

Guest presents audiences a mix of original music and cover material that spans country and singer-songwriter artists.

Admission: Free for those 21 and over.

Open Mic with Kevin Dorin

Venue: MickDuff’s Beer Hall, 220 Cedar St., in Sandpoint.

Time: 6-9 p.m.

Come out for a positive environment to share your passion or just come to take it all in. All levels of performers are welcome.

Friday, Aug. 17

‘Blind Panic’

Venue: The Heartwood Center, 615 Oak St., in Sandpoint.

Time: Doors at 7 p.m., curtain at 7:30 p.m. (also on Aug. 18, 24 and 25)

Ever since Tim was dumped by Mia, he’s been a mess. Needless to say, his friends are worried. That’s why Kate and Paul are insisting he go on a blind date with Janine. To say Tim is excited about meeting someone new would be … a lie. Blind Panic is an anxiety-filled comedy written/directed by Chris Herron and produced by Unknown Locals.

Gabriel Rutledge

Venue: Little Panida Theater, 304 N. First Ave., in Sandpoint.

Time: 7:30 p.m.

Gabriel makes people laugh from television, comedy festivals to the three albums playing on Sirius radio. Rated PG-13 for language/content.

Bill Price

Venue: Pend d’Oreille Winery, 301, Cedar St., in Sandpoint.

Time: 5-8 p.m.

With one foot in folk and the other in rock, Bill Price is a singer-songwriter who performs for house concerts and festivals alike.

Marshall McLean & The Holy Rollers Band

Venue: 219 Lounge, 219 First Ave., in Sandpoint.

Time: 9 p.m.

McLean has been a creative force in the Northwest for more than a decade and his Americana indie rock band carries with it the unique sound that is becoming distinct to this part of the country.

Admission: Free for those 21 and over.

Devon Wade

Venue: MickDuff’s Beer Hall, 220 Cedar St. in Sandpoint.

Time: 6:30-9:30 p.m.

Artists’ Studio Tour

Venue: Various artists’ studios.

Time: 10 a.m.-4 p.m. (also on Aug. 18 and 19)

Take the self-guided tour and visit the working studios of painters, sculptors, photographers, jewelers, potters, glass artists and more.

Set your own schedule and enjoy the scenery as you explore the works of familiar favorites and new artists in the area.

‘Unleashed Goes Country!’

Venue: Circle Moon Theatre, located on Highway 211, 3 1/2 miles north of Highway 2, near Newport, Wash.

Time: 6:30 p.m. dinner service, curtain opens at 7:30 p.m. (Also Aug. 18, 23, 24 and 25)

It’s time to round up your special Cowgirl or Cowboy and head on over to the big, red barn known as Circle Moon Theater for ‘Unleashed Goes Country!’ The show offers old-time favorites originally performed by the likes of Patsy Cline and Hank Williams. So saddle up for some great food, fun, laughter, and music as the Cowpokes of Northwoods trot out their stuff.

Saturday, Aug. 18

Master Illusionist & Storyteller Harris III

Venue: Panida Theater 300 N. First Ave., in Sandpoint.

Time: 6 p.m.

If wonder is reawakened, curiosity comes alive, and you begin to use your imagination to create, innovate, and dream again. International Master Storyteller and Illusionist Harris III will be on the main stage at The Panida.

Kids’ Day & Coeur d’Alene Kids’ Marimba

Venue: Sandpoint Farmers Market, Farmin Park, Third Ave. & Oak St., downtown Sandpoint.

Time: Market starts at 9 a.m., music from 10 a.m.-1 p.m.

There will be more than 20 youth vendors selling their handmade wares at the market during regular hours. UI Extension Office and the Bonner County Gardeners’ Association will also be hosting fun kids activities and music will be provided by Coeur d’Alene Kids’ Marimba Band.

Vocalist and songwriter, Sadie Sicilia, accompanied by classically trained piano player, Desiree Bernhard. A combination of originals and covers with a wide variety of genres including blues, jazz, soul, pop, classic rock, etc.

Sunday, August 19

‘Othello’

Venue: Bonner County Fairgrounds, 4203 N. Boyer Ave., in Sandpoint.

Time: Gates open at 3 p.m. with afternoon entertainment, play starts at 6 p.m.

Shakespeare in Sandpoint and Montana Shakespeare in the Parks present this performance of Shakespeare’s ‘Othello.’

Arrive early with chairs, blankets, and picnics — entertainments await you! As an added treat, Gypsy Divas Dance Troupe will perform throughout the afternoon. Gypsy Divas offers a blend of unique styles, costumes, music and expression, and is made up of local Sandpoint women dancers. The director, Brietta Leader, co-choreographs with Hallie Owen and Titina VanHoorn.

Lost Horse Press’ will continue the collaboration they initiated last summer with the Music Conservatory of Sandpoint: Their young music students will perform the opening concert for ‘Othello.’

This year, the Sandpoint performance of Othello will be filmed by PBS for inclusion in a documentary about Montana Shakespeare in the Parks, to be shown on Montana PBS and nationally.

This event is hosted by Lost Horse Press, an independent, non-profit poetry press.
