Weisz, Brass lead Bulldogs past Tigers in XC dual

| August 26, 2018 1:00 AM

SPIRIT LAKE — Sandpoint senior Ephriam Weisz edged Timberlake junior Logan Hunt by four seconds to win the boys race, and Sandpoint senior Niah Brass finished seven seconds ahead of Tiger sophomore Megan Hatrock in the girls race, part of a nonleague cross country season-opening dual on Saturday morning at Timberlake High School.

The race was supposed to be held at the University of Idaho extension property in Sandpoint, but when Bulldog coaches Matt and Angie Brass were setting up the course at 6:20 a.m. the AQI smoke rating was at 157, just above the 150 cutoff to compete. The air in Spirit Lake was at 77 so the race was moved on the fly.

The 2.06 mile flat track provided a shorter race that the usual 5K high school cross country course, which the kids seemed to like.

“It’s kind of fun for them, they get out and just race, not worried about the time since there’s no reference. The Timberlake guy (Hunt) had a four second lead and Ephriam reeled him in and passed him on the backstretch of the track,” described Matt Brass of the race, noting Niah enjoyed the opportunity to race against the boys. “She liked having all one race, we ran the girls and the guys together. She liked having competition all around, and ran a smart, controlled race.”

Both teams are at the Farragut Invitational on Sept. 8.
