This year marks the 200th anniversary of the debut of “Silent Night, Holy Night”. This hymn has become the best-loved worship moment of many Christians — even those who only come to church once a year. Something mystical occurs as the faithful light their candles and sing the hope of “all is calm, all is bright” — peace and light for the world.
The worship series at First Lutheran Church in Sandpoint celebrate the carol’s message over the entire season of Advent and highlight its call for the lives of the faithful that offer guidance all year long.
Also upcoming this Advent season, on Wednesdays (Dec. 12 and 19), is a soup supper at 6 p.m. The community is invited to come and enjoy a variety of soups and fellowship. First Lutheran’s Women’s Circles and church council will host the meals.
Following the suppers at 7 p.m., the community is invited to gather in the chapel for this time of song and prayer as those gathered seek God’s peace, joy, love and hope being born for us each day.
On Sunday, Dec. 9, the 10 a.m. service will feature the Selkirk Brass with organist Corina Hughes. The 8:15 a.m. service will featured a pared-down version led by Bud Smith and piano.
The “Calm and Bright” series continues its buildup to Christmas Eve when the congregation lifts their candles and join their voices in singing “Silent Night”; a yearning for the Savior’s birth. At 5 p.m., the music will be led by Spirit Sounds; and at 7:30 p.m., the music will by the organist and choir.
The community is invited to join the First Lutheran congregation as they hear the timeless message “Silent Night, Holy Night” and enjoy the stars, tree, lights, music and Scripture that help the faithful reflect on that message.
